About this event

Literary and cultural scholar Elisabeth Bronfen examines the lap dissolve in Douglas Sirk’s films: the transition in which one image gradually overlaps with another. The lecture considers how this cinematic technique links personal sacrifice, family relationships and wider political emotions, revealing connections that run beneath the surface of Sirk’s melodramas.

German, Austrian or Swiss connection

Bronfen was born in Munich and completed her doctorate and habilitation at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Her career spans German, Swiss and American academic life: she is Professor Emerita of English and American Studies at the University of Zurich and Global Distinguished Professor at NYU. The German connection is biographical and educational, alongside the lecture’s focus on Sirk.
