About this event

Celebrate Claudia Breger’s Art’s Assemblies: Political Aesthetics in Transatlantic Dialogue with a discussion of how artworks engage political life and imagine different futures. Breger is joined by Madeleine Dobie, Andreas Huyssen, Oliver Simons and Simone Stirner. The book connects contemporary approaches to literature, film and art with earlier debates about political aesthetics, collective experience and the unfinished histories of violence.

German, Austrian or Swiss connection

Andreas Huyssen was born in Germany in 1942. His research has examined German literature and culture, modernism, cultural memory and the politics of remembrance. He appears here as one of the panelists, not as the evening’s sole lecturer. The book discussion also connects with Columbia’s Germanic Languages program; the participants’ nationalities are not inferred from departmental affiliations.

Admission: Free and open to the public, with registration required even for Columbia and Barnard ID holders. In-person and Zoom attendance are available. The program begins at 6:15 p.m.; no end time has been announced.
