About this event
Michael Lowenthal joins Tom Beer, editor-in-chief of Kirkus Reviews, to discuss Place Envy: Essays in Search of Orientation. The collection follows Lowenthal’s search for belonging as a writer, an agnostic Jew and a gay traveler, linking family history with encounters across countries and communities.
The German-Jewish connection includes his Holocaust-refugee grandparents, an uncle who died at Bergen-Belsen and the family history he explores in his grandmother’s German hometown. The conversation is presented by the Leo Baeck Institute, which preserves the history and culture of German-speaking Jews.
The in-person talk takes place December 1, 2026, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th Street. General admission is free; reserve through the ticket link on the organizer’s page.
